APPROACHING TOTALITY For John Furniss

APPROACHING TOTALITY

For John Furniss

a ghostly veil is draped

over the entirety

blankets the house,

grass, & trees

stellar jays

aieennh! aiennh!

in warning

as the world goes dark

everything quiets down

& a million anxieties

suddenly recede as

a thousand gleaming crescents

fan across the patio and lawn

Christopher Luna and Toni Partington's contributions to Vancouver's Community Constellation, a collaborative art piece

I am very proud to have been among those invited to contribute to the Community Constellation, a collaborative art project in which several artists were gicven a small, round wooden circle upon which to create a piece on the theme of "community." These circles were then connected together and displayed at the Brickhouse Bar and Grill (109 W 15th St, http://www.vancouverbrickhouse.com/) and later at The Space (2315.5 Main St., behind One World Merchants, http://thespaceartcollective.blogspot.com/). Here is a photograph that I took of the piece as it appeared in The Space:

Colleen Lindsay, who is one of the founding members of The Space, wrote a great article about the project: http://www.vanvoice.com/article/20686-art+goes+round

My thanks to Colleen Lindsay for inviting me to contribute to this unique project. Her role as  a local muse and mentor has inspired all of us. I would also like to thank those in Vancouver who continue to support my work. I am very proud to be a part of this growing community of artists. Art is happening in the 'Couve!

Photos and audio from a special viewing party in Vancouver, WA for Tom DiCillo's new documentary about the Doors, "When You're Strange"

On Friday, July 30, 2010 members of Vancouver, WA's burgeoning poetry community gathered in the home I share with fellow poet Toni Partington to celebrate the release of Tom DiCillo's thoroughly entertaining new documentary about The Doors entitled "When You're Strange."

The screening was preceded by an open mic during which participants read Jim Morrison's poetry. I explained that while Jim Morrison had never received his due as a poet, it was his spoken word recording with The Doors, "An American Prayer," that had shown me how potent the combination of poetry and music could be. I have been drawn to Morrsion's poetry for years because he believed in the power that words have to liberate people, and took the poet's potential role as a shaman seriously.

Toni and I would like to thank Anni Becker for her marvelous photos of the event, and Rich Lindsay for recording, editing, and posting the podcast of the open mic. Finally, I would like to thank the Doors for their music, which continues to move and inspire me, and for allowing us to host this party.

Also in attendance that day: Richard and Debra Marshall (my sister and brother-in-law, residents of Syracuse, NY who were visiting the Northwest for the first time), Lori and Jake Loranger, Angelo Luna, Mokii, Bernadette, Jenney Pauer, and Kyle David Congdon.
